National Nutrition Month 2013

This year marks the 40th anniversary of National Nutrition Month.  National Nutrition Month actually began as a week long celebration, “National Nutrition Week”, in 1973, however became a month long celebration in 1980.  Each year the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics highlights a single theme geared toward promoting healthy eating and physical activity.  This years theme highlights what I advocate every day “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day”.  I believe that everyone should enjoy and savor their food.  Restrictive diets that force individuals to eat only certain foods and especially foods they dislike do not work. I never expect a client to eat something I suggest if they simple dislike it.

Of course I encourage everyone to eat more fruits and vegetables, include whole grains, low fat dairy, lean meats, and to be physically active.  We should be adventurous and try new foods!  However if a client dislikes milk or yogurt I will find alternative foods to provide necessary calcium.  A lot of my clients dislike fish, which is rich in omega 3 fatty acids.  I will help them find other foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids that they will enjoy.  I want my clients to enjoy eating while achieving their health goals.
